Jackley says Sioux Falls police shooting was justified

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says a South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation review indicates that Sioux Falls Police were justified in shooting a man armed with two knives during an an April 4th incident.

Minnehaha County Sheriff Deputies received a mental health detention warrant for 42-year-old Daniel K. McKillip. The deputies tried to serve the warrant but McKillip refused to comply and eventually produced two knives.

Officers tried a less lethal round but that didn’t work. When McKillip began to stand up with the knives, two Sioux Falls Police Officers fired three lethal rounds.

McKillip was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital for treatment. After he was discharged from the hospital, he was placed on a mental health detention warrant.

Jackley says the suspect had the means and opportunity to cause bodily injury to law enforcement officers present and he posed a safety risk to those nearby.
